18 June 2026

Dublin Chamber has welcomed the commencement of preparatory works on the Greater Dublin Drainage (GDD) Project, describing the development as an important step towards delivering the infrastructure needed to support housing, economic growth and investment across the Greater Dublin Area.

Uisce Éireann has confirmed that early works are now underway following approval of the project in December 2025. The project, which remains on track for completion in 2031, will provide wastewater treatment capacity equivalent to a population of approximately 500,000 and support the delivery of up to 185,000 new homes across north Dublin and parts of Meath and Kildare.

The GDD Project is one of the most important strategic infrastructure investments planned for the region and will play a vital role in facilitating housing delivery, economic development and environmental protection. Once completed, it will significantly alleviate pressure on the existing Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant while ensuring the region has the capacity required to accommodate future growth.

Welcoming the announcement, Aebhric McGibney, Director of Public and International Affairs at Dublin Chamber, said:

"The commencement of preparatory works on the Greater Dublin Drainage Project is a very welcome and important milestone for Dublin and the wider region. Investment in critical water and wastewater infrastructure is essential if we are to deliver the homes, jobs and economic growth that Ireland needs over the coming decades.

For too long, infrastructure constraints have acted as a barrier to development. The progress being made on this project demonstrates what can be achieved when strategic infrastructure is prioritised. The Greater Dublin Drainage Project will provide the capacity needed to support tens of thousands of new homes, strengthen the region’s attractiveness for investment and help ensure sustainable growth into the future.

Dublin Chamber looks forward to seeing the project continue to advance on schedule and encourages continued focus on delivering the critical infrastructure projects that underpin Ireland’s economic competitiveness and quality of life."

Preparatory activities are currently progressing at Abbottstown, Clonshaugh and Silloge, with preliminary construction works expected to commence later this year. Main construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the project remaining on track for accelerated completion in 2031.
