Progress on Luas Finglas Welcome, but Must Be Matched by Faster Delivery

Dublin Chamber has welcomed confirmation that the Luas extension to Finglas can now proceed following the resolution of three cases in the High Court, removing a key barrier to the project. Government needs to provide priority funding in 2026 to the project as this is the last remaining barrier to its implementation.

The Chamber said the decision provides important clarity for a long-planned piece of transport infrastructure serving a rapidly growing part of the city and presents an opportunity to restore momentum in the delivery of key public transport projects.

Stephen Browne, Head of Public Affairs at Dublin Chamber, said “This is a positive step forward and brings much-needed certainty to the Luas Finglas project. However, the Sectoral Investment Plan for Transport does not have this project commencing until 2029, with delivery pushed out past 2030.”

“Luas Finglas is exactly the type of scheme that should be advanced, given its role in supporting housing delivery and improving connectivity in north Dublin. There is now a clear need to refocus on delivery. Prioritising projects that can be progressed in the short term and ensuring funding is aligned with that objective”.

Dublin Chamber said that accelerating the delivery of high-capacity public transport will be critical to supporting Dublin’s continued growth and maintaining the region’s competitiveness.

Mr Browne added, “Certainty around timelines and ringfenced investment in delivery will be key. Progress on Luas Finglas should now be matched by a broader shift toward delivering the infrastructure Dublin needs at pace.”
