Dublin Chamber has welcomed today’s announcement by Minister Chambers of a major review of regulations affecting infrastructure delivery, alongside the establishment of a new Infrastructure Regulatory Simplification Unit within the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation.
The creation of a dedicated unit to examine and streamline regulatory processes is a significant and practical step. For Dublin’s business community, regulatory overlap, sequencing issues and extended approval timelines have repeatedly slowed the delivery of projects that are critical to housing supply, transport, water services and energy capacity.
Stephen Browne, Head of Public Affairs at Dublin Chamber, said: “The establishment of a dedicated unit to examine regulatory barriers is a positive and necessary development. There needs to be certainty and timely decision making in the delivery of the infrastructure required to support a growing population and economy. What matters now is pace and follow through. The review must move quickly from identification of barriers to implementation of solutions.”
Dublin Chamber has consistently highlighted that Ireland’s infrastructure challenge is not solely about funding but it is also about processes. Greater coordination between regulatory agencies and appropriate timelines are essential to ensure that nationally significant projects can progress without unnecessary delay.
The Chamber also emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum under the Government’s Accelerating Infrastructure Action Plan.
“The Accelerating Infrastructure Action Plan sets out clear actions to improve delivery. It is essential that this new review builds on that work and sustains momentum.”
Delivering infrastructure at the scale and speed required is central to Dublin’s competitiveness and Ireland’s long term economic resilience. Today’s announcement is a welcome step towards ensuring that the regulatory framework supports that objective.
