Why Learning Flexibility Is Key to Addressing the IT Skills Shortage

Maureen Fox, Business Relationships Manager at The Open University (OU) in Ireland, closely monitors the skills landscape in Ireland and the UK. She recognises that the digital skills shortage is not confined to Ireland alone; it is a prevalent issue in a tight labour market, marked by a growing IT skills gap.  She emphasises the challenges faced in recruiting and retaining suitable talent, particularly in fields like cybersecurity and digital leadership.

Maureen explains: “The Open University advocates a lifelong learning mindset within organisations to successfully navigate digital transformation. Offering relevant opportunities for staff to upskill and reskill into new digital roles is seen as a crucial step.”

In light of the 2023 European Year of Skills, Maureen suggests that now is an opportune time to consider flexible training options. She draws attention to a recent Aontas survey, which revealed that while 65% of adults aged 17–64 in Ireland had engaged in learning within the last three years, there exists a disparity.

Maureen explains: “The majority of these learners tend to be younger, reside in Dublin, and have spent more time in formal education. This implies that a significant portion of adults miss out on learning and re-employment prospects, which is bad news for businesses seeking fresh IT talent.”

Maureen expresses her commitment to equity as a fundamental aspect of the OU's social mission, which is dedicated to breaking down barriers to learning, ensuring wider access to education. The OU's flexible, supported distance learning model accommodates students' lives, including those who disclose disabilities or are juggling studies with full-time employment (with over 37,000 such students).

Maureen concludes: “Ambition should not be constrained by a busy life. Access to flexible education can unlock opportunities for lifelong learning, allowing individuals to reach their full potential. The OU is positioned to assist both individuals and businesses seeking to make this investment.

The Open University offers accredited microcredentials and short courses in critical business topics, such as data science, software development, digital management, and cybersecurity, equipping businesses with the skills needed for growth and Maureen would be delighted to talk to any business interested in partnering.
