Dublin Airport has announced proposals for new measures to encourage airlines to operate lower CO₂ emission aircraft. The proposed incentive scheme includes a special discount on aeronautical charges, making Dublin Airport the European capital city airport with the lowest costs. Plus, airlines flying high emission aircraft will face higher charges, encouraging cleaner operations.
In the next phase of their environmental strategy, Dublin Airport will consult with airlines to introduce discounts that incentivize newer, quieter, and cleaner aircraft. This includes a 25% discount on all runway charges for airlines operating the most environmentally friendly aircraft throughout the day. These expected multi-million euro discounts will support sustainable airport operations and are set to go live within the next six months.
Dublin Airport has already achieved carbon neutral status for its direct emissions, showcasing its commitment to a greener future. The introduction of generous incentives for airlines to adopt lower CO₂ emission aircraft is a progressive step toward promoting greater levels of sustainability. Although the aviation industry faces challenges, Dublin Airport is dedicated to working alongside its airline partners to meet global climate change and sustainability targets.
As an airport operator, Dublin Airport levies charges to fund regulated activities, ensuring passengers enjoy a safe, high-quality, and passenger experience. These charges are set through consultation with airlines and the independent economic regulator IAA (formerly CAR). Dublin Airport aims to implement these new incentives as part of a multi-annual scheme.
Kenny Jacobs, CEO of Dublin Airport, expressed a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, aiming for a 51% reduction in emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Alongside aviation stakeholders and airline partners, Dublin Airport is actively supporting the sector's transition to a sustainable model, addressing emissions across all scopes.
In 2022, Dublin Airport reduced its carbon emissions by 24% compared to a 2018 baseline average. This was made possible through energy management processes, LED upgrades, fleet replacements, and participation in campaigns promoting reduced energy usage. Dublin Airport has also surpassed its recycling target with an impressive 46% recycling rate.
In the coming year, Dublin Airport aims to further enhance its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) program. The focus will be placed on implementing a new reporting standard and developing an updated action plan that will guide their sustainability efforts from 2024 onwards.

Following the successful North Runway development, Dublin Airport plans to accelerate its €1.9 billion capital investment program, focusing on sustainability projects. This includes a refurbished terminal, new piers, gates, stands, and transfer facilities, ensuring a fantastic and lasting experience for future generations of air travellers in and out of Ireland.
