Ask a friend or colleague about sustainability training and they will probably point to the person in their organisation who looks after sustainability. That way of thinking is becoming harder to sustain.
Irish businesses operate within a European regulatory environment where sustainability information, reporting and business practices are becoming a bigger part of how companies operate. While particular responsibilities may sit with specific teams, the knowledge needed to respond to them extends across the business.
A finance manager needs to understand what is being reported. Procurement teams need to understand what suppliers are being asked for. Senior managers need to understand how sustainability relates to business decisions and risk. Business leaders need to be able to have informed conversations with customers, employees, investors and other stakeholders.
There is also a commercial reason for developing this knowledge. Customers, investors, employees and larger companies are asking more questions about how businesses operate, where they source from and what they can demonstrate.
At Dublin Chamber, we are looking at sustainability training through this wider business lens. The aim is not to turn everyone into a sustainability specialist. It is to give people across a business enough knowledge to understand the issues relevant to their role and make informed decisions in a changing business and regulatory environment.
Our upcoming Strategic & Sustainability Leadership workshop on 8 October will look at sustainability leadership, reporting requirements including CSRD, and how businesses communicate this work to stakeholders. While the workshop is aimed at leaders and managers, the knowledge covered has relevance across a much wider range of business roles.
Sustainability may be the name of the subject, but the skills are business skills.
