Sustainability is a fundamental principle in commercial practice, with businesses evaluated not only on their sustainability actions, but on how effectively and convincingly they communicate those actions. For many organisations, the challenge lies in turning seemingly complex decarbonisation activity into a story that employees, customers, and stakeholders can understand, trust, and engage with.
Energy Audit powers Aran Woolen Mills net zero transformation
Effective sustainability communication delivers an organisation’s environmental and social impact in a clear, credible, and consistent manner, tailored to diverse audiences and grounded in real action. That’s where Aran Woollen Mills is getting it right.
Founded in 1965 in Westport, Co Mayo, Aran Woollen Mills has long embedded sustainability into its identity, from using 100% natural, biodegradable wool to prioritising responsible sourcing and eco‑friendly packaging. But like many established Irish businesses, rising energy costs and national climate targets prompted a more structured look at energy use and emissions.
For this sustainability conscious business, an energy audit was a strategic starting point identifying energy and cost-saving opportunities while also igniting a company-wide commitment to reaching net-zero emissions.
Supported by SSE Airtricity and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the audit provided clear, practical recommendations including short‑term efficiency measures such as lighting sensors. The transformative longer‑term investment however has been solar power installation across its sites, projected to generate over 29% of the company’s energy needs.
But the audit went even further than identify efficiency opportunities; it gave the business a common language to talk about sustainability. By translating the technical findings into clear priorities and actions, Aran Woollen Mills’ sustainability ambitions could be communicated with confidence across the organisation, forming part of its everyday operational planning.
Aran Woollen Mills used the insights to further engage its internal stakeholders, forming a cross‑departmental “Green Team” dedicated to driving sustainability initiatives within the organisation. This team undertook training with the SEAI Energy Academy which further reinforced shared understanding and momentum for the group made up of employees across Operations, HR, Sales and Production.
Externally, the company has focused on communicating the entire journey. Why an energy was undertaken; and the subsequent insights, ambitions and actions. This level of communication and transparency is building credibility with its customers and stakeholders, while demonstrating the true value of Aran Woollen Mills’ sustainability efforts.
