The Proposed EU Product Label

Back to Articles

28 January 2026

This EU product label could quietly break the linear economy. The European Commission is preparing a new Ecodesign label for electronics, textiles, furniture, mattresses and more. This label will translate EU Ecodesign policy into something markets actually respond to. Clear and comparable performance signals, online and in-store, based on indicators like:

▫️carbon footprint
▫️recycled content
▫️durability
▫️repairability
▫️recyclability

In other words: what determines whether a product belongs in a circular economy!
This label turns sustainability from a marketing claim into a design constraint.
Once environmental performance of products is visible and comparable:

▫️linear products start to look expensive
▫️short lifetimes become a liability
▫️design, procurement and pricing decisions change

That’s why this isn’t about consumer nudging, it’s about market shaping!
If aligned with Ecodesign rules, DPP and EPR, this label could become one of the EU’s most powerful - and least flashy - tools for systems change and the circular transition!
