Public Procurement Is Changing, and It Is Happening in Real Time.

The direction is clear. Sustainability is now formally written into how the public sector buys goods and services in Ireland. With the Government’s Green Public Procurement Strategy in place, environmental criteria are moving from the margins to the centre of tendering decisions. For many contracts, this is already having a direct impact on who wins work and who does not.

Public bodies in Ireland spend billions each year. That scale gives procurement real weight. From 2025, all tenders over €50,000 must include environmental specifications and award criteria. In many cases, a meaningful share of marks will be attached to these requirements. For businesses, this changes how bids are prepared and how value is demonstrated.

For some organisations, this feels unfamiliar. For others, it is an opening. Understanding how green criteria are assessed, how life cycle costing is applied, and how expectations vary by sector is quickly becoming part of standard commercial knowledge.

On Wednesday 4th February, Dublin Chamber will host a half-day virtual workshop on Green Public Procurement as part of the Sustainability Academy led by expert Peter Brennan. This workshop was built to help businesses make sense of what is now expected and what is coming next.
