25 September 2025

A report published by Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) this week has found that investment by SMEs in digitalisation and decarbonisation fell in 2023, from 41 percent of firms investing in digital assets in 2021 to 36 percent doing so in 2021. The report, titled SME Investment Report 2024: Developments Between 2016 and 2023, found that while nearly 60 percent of SMEs invested in capital assets in 2023, an increase from 2020 and 2021 (55 percent of SMEs), the figures are still below the pre-pandemic levels (64 percent of SMEs). Climate- and energy-efficiency–related investments also fell, both in terms of the proportion of firms and median expenditure from €34,000 to €20,000, while the proportion of SMEs indicating that climate change adaptation is important for their business fell across all sectors and SMEs of all sizes. The report, which provides an analysis of investment trends among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ireland was co-authored and funded by the Department of Finance and used data from the Department of Finance Credit Demand Survey.
