THE HomeShare:Shared Living, Safer Homes and Stronger Communities

Back to Articles

23 June 2026

Do you have an older parent, relative — or indeed neighbour — living alone?

Do you worry about them, especially at night, but want to honour their wish to remain living independently in the home they love?

Or perhaps you have an adult son or daughter working hard, paying high rents every month, yet struggling to save for a deposit to ever get on the housing ladder?

At THE HomeShare, we believe one simple idea can help solve both challenges.

THE HomeShare is Ireland’s multi award-winning Homeshare service, carefully matching older people and adults living with a disability who have a spare room in their home with Garda-vetted sharers looking for affordable accommodation.

In exchange for reduced-cost accommodation, the sharer provides companionship, an overnight presence, and around 10 hours per week of practical support such as sharing meals, light household tasks, technology help, shopping trips or simply being there for peace of mind.

No personal care is provided — instead, it is about connection, reassurance and helping people remain living safely and confidently in their own communities for as long as possible.

For many families, knowing someone trusted is in the home overnight can make an enormous difference. For many sharers, Homesharing offers not just affordable accommodation, but a genuine sense of belonging and purpose.

At a time when Ireland faces an ageing population, rising loneliness and a chronic housing crisis, Homesharing is proving to be a simple but powerful community-based solution.

Since 2017, THE HomeShare has supported hundreds of successful matches across Ireland and continues to grow as more families look for alternatives to premature nursing home care or isolated living.

We are proud to be:
• Winners of the Newstalk Changemakers Local Business Award 2026
• Winners of the Chambers Ireland Sustainable Small Business Impact Award 2025
• Winners of the All-Ireland Social Sustainability, Diversity & Inclusion Award 2024

Most importantly, we are proud of the lives being transformed every day through companionship, connection and shared living.

If someone comes to mind as you read this — a parent, neighbour, client, colleague or young adult struggling with housing — we would love to speak with you.

Together, we can create safer homes, stronger communities and better futures for all generations.
