How CPPAs are shaping the Energy Future of Ireland’s Leading Businesses

As businesses face increasing expectations around sustainability, Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) are providing a reliable path to meeting these goals, while also delivering long-term financial certainty.

A CPPA allows a business in any sector to buy electricity directly from a renewable energy generator - like a wind farm - offering clear traceability and long-term price certainty.

For companies across all sectors seeking greater control over their energy future, a CPPA offers a practical way to cut carbon, meet climate targets, and secure long-term energy costs - all through a single, straightforward agreement.

In a landmark move announced in May, SSE Airtricity and Musgrave Group signed Ireland’s first all-island CPPA in the retail sector.

The agreement will see Musgrave offtake 100% of the supply from Richfield Wind Farm in Co Wexford and Bessy Bell 2 Wind Farm in Co Tyrone, wind farms operated by SSE Renewables, a sister company to SSE Airtricity. It will contract renewable electricity for Musgrave’s offices, distribution centres, and network of more than 100 SuperValu and Centra stores across the island.

By securing long-term access to renewable energy through a CPPA, Musgrave is not only managing its energy costs and reducing exposure to market volatility but is also making substantial progress on its path to carbon neutrality by 2040.

Commenting on the announcement Noel Keeley, CEO, Musgrave Group said “This landmark agreement marks a significant milestone in our journey toward Net Zero and empowers our SuperValu and Centra stores to meaningfully reduce their environmental impact. Our network of stores is deeply committed to driving sustainability and making a positive difference in their local communities. Together with our retail partners we have ambitious plans for our journey to Net Zero, while supporting the renewable energy sector in Ireland through partnerships like this CPPA.”

Businesses across a range of commercial and industrial sectors are choosing to partner with SSE Airtricity on CPPAs, drawn by the tailored nature of the agreements and how straightforward they are to manage.

SSE Airtricity is uniquely positioned to offer physical CPPAs by working with its sister company, SSE Renewables, which owns or part-owns 31 wind farms across the island of Ireland and has an active development pipeline of onshore and offshore projects.

Speaking to the landmark agreement, Stephen Gallagher Managing Director SSE Airtricity said “As energy partner, our role is to ensure Musgrave has access to reliable,

renewable energy solutions, and that SuperValu and Centra stores can continue to lead in sustainability. We look forward to continued collaborations to drive positive environmental impact, supporting a Net Zero future.”

CPPAs form part of a broader set of energy solutions from SSE Airtricity, including energy audits and free surveys to help businesses better understand their energy use, identify savings, reduce risk, and cut carbon.

The agreement between SSE Airtricity and Musgrave is a clear signal that CPPAs are fast becoming a cornerstone of corporate sustainability strategies across Ireland. As more businesses seek to lock in renewable energy sources and future-proof their operations, partnerships like this set a powerful precedent for what’s possible.
