Revised MetroLink Proposal a Plan For Dublin to Get Behind

The decision to drop the southside element of the MetroLink project is “not ideal”, but makes sense in order to move the project along, according to business group Dublin Chamber.
The Chamber was responding to the publication today of a revised preferred route for MetroLink, a new mostly-underground rail link that will run between Swords and Dublin city centre via Dublin Airport.
The Chamber described today’s announcement as another very important step towards the delivery of a Metro for Dublin – a project that has been talked about, and that Dubliners have been waiting on, for decades.
According to Dublin Chamber’s Head of Communications Graeme McQueen: “We liked the ambition shown by the NTA to have a dedicated Metro line that would run all the way from Swords to Sandyford. However, the NTA’s decision to alter this aspect of the plan is understandable and necessary in order to push the project forward. Dublin Chamber’s own submission last year called for more detail on how the upgrade of the Luas Green Line to Metro standard would work and also the level of impact this would have on the running of the Green Line during the construction phase.
“The revised route for MetroLink, which will see the Metro line stop at Charlemont, is very similar to the previous Metro North plan – a plan which Dublin Chamber fully supported. Stopping the Metro at Charlemont leaves open a whole host of opportunities to expand the Metro in the coming years and decades into other areas of Dublin’s southside. This approach makes sense and will hopefully allow for construction of the project to begin as soon as possible,” said McQueen.
Dublin Chamber said that MetroLink has the potential to transform Dublin's business competitiveness and also the quality of life on offer in the city.
Mr McQueen said: “MetroLink can provide the cornerstone of a public transport network that will set Dublin up for the next 150 years. Building MetroLink will address a critical missing link in Dublin’s transport network. It will send a message to the world that Dublin is serious about solving its congestion issues and about improving quality of life in the city. Dublin has already been waiting far too long for this project.”
The Chamber said that MetroLink will provide a transport solution for Dublin Airport, but also for the rapidly growing North County Dublin region.
Mr McQueen said: “Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport are expected to exceed 36 million by 2022. Ireland clearly needs a direct rail link between the national airport and the centre of the capital, allowing overseas visitors to connect quickly and conveniently with the city and the wider public transport network. The absence of a modern amenity like this makes an underwhelming impression upon business travellers and foreign investors. MetroLink is also needed to cater for the additional 40,000+ people who will be commuting into Dublin city centre from north County Dublin within the next 5 years. Since 2011, Fingal’s population has grown by more than the whole province of Connacht. A new rail link will go a long way to support these strong growth levels and accommodate even more growth in the future."
