Engineers Ireland and Clearstream Solutions team up to deliver Carbon Management best practice training.
‘Carbon reduction delivers cost reduction’. This is the theme of a new autumn series of sustainability seminars being run by Clearstream Solutions and supported by Engineers Ireland. Headquartered in Sandyford Dublin and supported by the Dun Laoghaire Enterprise Board, Clearstream Solutions and its team of global experts provide clients with a range of carbon management and environmental services including training, project management and compliance.
Clearstream Solutions is headed up by Brian O’Kennedy, a seasoned supply chain executive. O’Kennedy argues that being green and sustainable for companies is not about some fluffy green wash PR . “Companies are facing increased cost pressure from rising Carbon Taxes, water rates, fuel bills and waste charges. By measuring and managing your carbon, you can achieve real savings, while adding value to your business, brand and employees. In Ireland we have traditionally focussed on energy reduction, and SEI have done a good job in highlighting this area. Energy has typically been where the greatest savings are achieved. However, going forward the other value chain elements such as water, waste, transport and materials are likely to become more significant factors and companies with low carbon cultures are future proofing their business.
Business development opportunities should also not be ignored. There is a strong correlation between sustainable business practice and company performance. Investors and shareholders are increasingly looking for companies to demonstrate clear and measureable sustainability credentials. In many countries, including France and Denmark, it is now a legal requirement for companies to publish a sustainability report alongside a financial report.
In the current climate, cost reduction is the number one focus for most companies. Some have considered putting environmental projects on hold. O’Kennedy argues that good carbon management is good business management and that viewing one’s business and supply chain through a carbon lens will generate real cost savings typically in the region of 20%. “A good starting point would be to attend one of our ‘Green Company’ seminars, covering a range of topics including ‘Green Supply Chain’,’ Green Public Procurement’ and ‘The Green Supplier’ and hear about global best practice from our panel of international consultants”.
