The introduction of free travel for under-5s on public transport will help encourage more families to visit Dublin over Christmas, according to business group Dublin Chamber.
The Chamber said that the free travel offer, combined with the launch next weekend of Luas Cross City, will provide a big boost for city centre businesses over the coming month and beyond.
According to Dublin Chamber’s Head of Public Affairs Graeme McQueen: “The news that children under the age of 5 can travel for free on public transport is hugely welcome for businesses in Dublin city centre. The free travel move will help entice lots of families to travel into Dublin this Christmas and to enjoy all of the amenities on offer. The cost of travel can be a barrier for young families, particularly at this time of year. The past few years have been tough for city centre businesses, but the introduction of free travel for under 5s, alongside the recently announced flat fare structure for city centre trips on Luas Cross City, all helps to make the city a more attractive place to visit.”
The Chamber said it is optimistic about the outlook for retailers in Dublin city centre this Christmas.
Mr McQueen said: “The launch of the new Luas Cross City green line extension is hugely exciting for Dublin. The line will open to passengers in just 8 days and represents a fantastic opportunity to get people to re-engage and re-discover Dublin city centre. There's lots going on in Dublin this Christmas and we expect a large number of families to come in and enjoy the amenities."
